Business Club, popularly known as B-Club, is IIT Kharagpur’s in-campus society for all things business. It is a knowledge sharing interface for like-minded individuals operating through a ‘knowledge-session’ approach. The Club also reaches out to the student community by organising Open House sessions, and increasingly, the general public, through initiatives like the Financial Literacy Drive.
History[edit | edit source]
Founding[edit | edit source]
Business Club was founded in 2009 as Genese-de-Strategie by Shailesh Gupta, Harsh Gupta, Sudipto Sannigrahi, and Mayank Mundra. Genesie-de-Strategie was started with a primary objective to educate the students about the world of business strategies. The founders felt a need for students to be informed about the working of the business world for their growth. Over the course of a year, they realised the need to have a more wholesome approach to the world of business. They formed the Business Club in 2010 with a broader perspective toward business.
Growth[edit | edit source]
- Indian Case Challenge and the Indian Biz Challenge organised by the Club have been huge success over its growth years.
- Affiliation to Technology Students’ Gymkhana (during the academic session 2014-15) brought official recognition to the club.
- The Business Club has started to reach out to the entire student population of the college by conducting Open House Sessions for their benefit.
- Financial Literacy Drive organised by the club has been an attempt at helping the society with the expertise available with them.
Functioning[edit | edit source]
Selections[edit | edit source]
Selections to the Business Club are held at the start of the academic year and are a one-time opportunity. Selection procedure consists of a group-discussion round followed by personal interview for the shortlisted candidates. Prospective members aren’t judged based on their business acumen, but on their ability to think clearly, present thoughts in a concise and structured manner, their dedication, and their zeal to learn.
Structure[edit | edit source]
Business Club has a four-levelled organisational structure.
- Advisors consist of fourth and fifth year members and are the senior most members whose experience helps in guiding the overall direction of the club.
- The executive body comprises of Governors and Heads who are in the third year of their study. They are responsible for heading various wings of the club and its management.
- The team of Sub-heads is responsible for day-to-day functioning of the club and execution of its plans. It consists of students in second year of their study.
- Associates are the first years who have a passion to win and are generally business oriented. These members are oriented towards gaining as much knowledge as they can from the pool of knowledge available with the seniors.
The functional structure of Business Club consists of three wings – finance, analytics and consultancy. These wings include all that happens within the world of business.
Knowledge Meetings[edit | edit source]
Organising knowledge meetings is the way by which knowledge dissipation happens in the Club. These meetings are conducted by Club members, where they meet and brainstorm on various topics of interest. A strong network consisting of resourceful seniors and mentor professors clarify any doubts the members may have and make the meetings fruitful.
Club members also work toward organising various competitions and Open House sessions and initiatives like the Financial Literacy Drive which build up their professional network and management skills.
Open House Sessions[edit | edit source]
Business Club is striving to impart basic knowledge about the various facets of business, thus making the students of IIT-Kharagpur more capable of making a mark on the ever evolving global industry.
Open house sessions in basic finance, supply chain management, consultancy et. al organised in conjunction with leading experts from their industries have gone a long way towards this.
Indian Case Challenge[edit | edit source]
Indian Case Challenge was conceived by the founders when they visited Germany for the Global Business Challenge. Inspired by the nature of the competition, they recognised the importance of having a similar competition in India, and thus Indian Case Challenge was born.
Started in 2012,Indian Case Challenge,a national level case study competition, became one of India’s largest in terms of the participation it sees and the prize money at stake. It challenges the best Undergraduate and Graduate students from all over India to compete against each other and prove their business and entrepreneurial mettle in a real life business case scenario. Not only are the participants expected to have strong business skills and financial understanding, but also a feeling for entrepreneurship and a sense for realising market opportunities.
The 2016 edition was conducted in association with Kshitij-the annual techno-management fest of IIT Kharagpur. ICC 2016 saw B-club joining hands with CIMA, XIMB and RMSoEE.as knowledge partners. It was sponsored by CIMA and ITC. With more than 600 teams registering, it saw participants from all over the country passionately thinking of out-of-the-box ideas.
Financial Literacy Drive[edit | edit source]
In order to expand the reach of the club and help the community along the way, a Financial Literacy Drive for disadvantaged poor households in an around the campus of IIT Kharagpur was organised.
The objective was to bring forth the advantages of savings and insurance schemes with particular focus on financial instruments like fixed and recurring deposits.
Club members visited the localities, communicating ideas on a door-to-door basis, reaching over 200 families in the process. A talk on Financial Literacy for farmers was also held at Agri-Expo 2015.
