Lawn Tennis
Lawn Tennis is one of the 13 sports which is a part of the General Championship during Inter IIT Sports Meet. All the IITs have outdoor facilities for successful conduction of the matches during the tournament. The sport sees participation from almost all IITs in both men’s and women’s format.
Facilities
There are 3 courts (2 Synthetic, 1 Hard Court), a Practice wall, enough for 6 people. The students are expected to fill the registration and pay a sum of 300 Rupees per year to avail the facilities. This also includes upto 3 Tennis Balls.
In 2018, Vinod Gupta funded the lawn tennis court for 2 new courts as well as 2 coaches for a 3-week tennis training camp (open for all) in the same year (Jan - Feb). The 2 new courts are expected to be ready before the Inter IIT Sports 2019 (Dec), to be organised by Kharagpur.
Format of Play
The playoff format follows a best-of-series throughout the competition with 5 and 3 games for men’s and women’s respectively. Each game is a best of 3 sets of Best of 11 games each. All matches are played using Wilson Tennis Balls and a player from a team can’t play in more than 2 matches. This means that a minimum of 2 players in the women’s team and 3 players in the men’s team is needed. The order of matches is as follows:
Men’s: | Women’s |
1st Match: Singles | 1st Match: Singles |
2nd Match: Doubles | 2nd Match: Doubles |
3rd Match: Reverse Singles | 3rd Match: Reverse Singles |
