Introduction and important thermodynamic functions : Laws of thermodynamics enthalpy, heat capacity, entropy, free energy and their interrelationships; Solutions - chemical potential, Raoults and Henrys law, Gibbs-Duhem equation, activity determination, properties of different solutions, quasichemical theory; Heterogeneous systems -equilibrium constants, Ellingham-Richardson diagrams, predominant area diagrams; Evolution of Phase diagrams-phase rule, free-energy-composition diagrams, solidus-liquidus lines, retrograde solidus; Interfaces - energy, shape, segregation at external and internal interfaces; solid electrolytes; Effect of high pressure on phase transformations; Point imperfections in crystalline solids-elementary and compound crystals.
