Classification : steel, non ferrous metals, composites.Ferrous alloys : properties, heat treatment, Carbon and low alloy structural steels, welding and associated problems. Non-magnetic steels, stainless steels, creep resistant steels, high strength and high toughness steels. Applications.Non-ferrous alloys : properties, heat treatment, Copper alloys, aluminium alloys and titanium alloys, Applications.Different types of commonly used composites : Concrete, fiber reinforced plastics. Structural materials for marine floating structures. Marine application of composite materials, fabrication method. Material characteristics resin, fibers. Elastic properties of FRP laminates. Laminate strength, effects of immersion and weathering. Test methods for evaluation of laminate properties. Structural analysis and design evaluation of design loads, composite beam and plate theories. Finite element analysis. Stiffened FRP panels. Superstructures in FRP.
