How does a department change work?[edit source]

Towards the latter half of the Spring Semester, around early March, the form for a branch change will be circulated amongst the first year undergraduate students. Those interested have to fill in programs in decreasing order of preference, and submit the form soon after. The decisions are made over the summer holidays, and announced shortly before the third semester commences. --Shushman (talk) 22:47, 14 May 2015 (IST)

General advice[edit source]

A department change, or DepC as it is referred to, is all about your CGPA in the first year. In general, keep your grades as high as possible to maximize your chances. At the same time, the number of choices in the form are limited, so do refer to the previous year cutoff CGPAs, along with knowing where you stand after the first semester, so that you make realistic choices.

Having said that, not getting a DepC (if you wanted one) should not dampen your spirits whatsoever. With additional subjects and minors, there are plenty of chances to pursue courses or programs you like. Also, if you find yourself in a likely position to get a DepC, do think it over long and hard before going through with it. JEE counseling had enough of making choices with very little experience or perspective, but the same does not have to apply to a DepC, if you put in effort to make an informed choice.
