Basics of EM waves, review of optical phenomena, optical instruments for biological systems.Optical sources and detectors for biomedical systems: Lasers, principle, types of lasers-gas laser, solid-state laser, wavelength tunability, semiconductor optoelectronic detectors, principles, types, application in sensing, detection-diagnosis, application in therapy. Interaction of light with biological system: Scattering-elastic and inelastic, Absorption spectra by biological media, light scattering from tissues and biosystem, Emission spectra- fluorescence and phosphorescence , applications to biology and medicine. Optical activity and birefringence, Light polarization for characterization and imaging. Optical Imaging, Laser Doppler velocimetry, interferometry, optical coherence tomography, hybrid optical imaging. Fiber optics and waveguides, coherent bundle imaging for remote interrogation, e ndoscopy, colonoscopy, diagnosis and sensing by fiber probes, fiber based biosensors
