Talk:Institute proxies

I think we need to explain what a proxy is, and a little bit about how it works. This will be useful for developers who want to figure out why their particular use case is/isn't supported by the proxy.

The instructions for Windows and the rest also need to be cleaned up. For example, I'm not sure what a "global proxy setting" even means. On Linux, applications launched from a shell are supposed to respect the HTTP_PROXY environment variable. How are Windows applications supposed to have the equivalent of that? AFAIK, on Windows too there is a way to set environment variables, apart from the IE settings. The current instructions and information about the proxy are confusing, and possibly wrong, and need to be edited.

I agree that we should explain what proxy is, and how and why it is need. The current settings, though aren't complete and don't describe each and every way to set up proxy, they are not wrong. Xtinct (talk) 17:50, 6 May 2015 (IST)

Hey @User:Amrav, it's been about 2 years since you posted that (rather strong) comment about the page. It's matured quite a bit now, do you think it's become better? Heroku workarounds

@Icyflame: The Heroku command is a little bit confusing. Could you please elaborate what exactly about the Heroku CLI doesn't work through the proxy, and why the command you wrote solves that problem? It would be nice to explain all of the Heroku proxy issues more generally, rather than just the rake db:migrate command. -- Amrav (talk) 04:39, 8 August 2015 (IST)

@Amrav Noted. I will expand on the description given to that command. And perhaps even add some screenshots of the outputs of the command, so as to clarify what it really does. Somehow, I missed this notification earlier, sorry about that.

VPN Gate

I found this free list of vpns provided by a Japanese university http://www.vpngate.net/en/, I also found this guide (https://blog.harshillodhi.co.in/softether-vpn-ubuntu-linux-client-configuration-behind-http-proxy/) and this (https://github.com/Dragon2fly/vpngate-with-proxy) terminal application around it. I wasn't able to connect to it for some reason, will investigate more later and will add to the wiki if successful. -- Hargup (talk) 14:24, 19 April 2017 (IST)
